Although still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun belonging to Mr. Schneider and a hand-written suicide note were found with the body.

The body was found by a park visitor from Maryland in an area that was rocks and had heavy undergrowth, said Lyn Rothgeb of the National Park Service. Searchers and dog teams combed the area September 7 through IS; the area was also searched by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft. The search was then suspended when no clues were found. One of the people who had worked on the search for Mr. Schneider in September told Ms. Rothgeb that they had searched very close to the area where Mr. Schneider's •body was eventually discovered.
