Saturday morning was a beautiful morning for a race. The air was cool, yet the bright spring sunshine held the promise of warmth. By race time, 267 people had registered and most were lined up along U.S. 522 in front of the Vierling’s Flint Hill Packing Shed.
At 10 a.m., a Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department vehicle blasted its siren and started the 20th annual running of the Fodderstack 10-K race. A brief 36 minutes, 51 seconds later, Dizzy Pizzazzly became the overall men’s winner. Almost four minutes later, Jeanne Grillo was the first woman across the finish line with a time of40:49.
Matt Iten won the Eva L. Smith Memorial Award for being the first man from Rappahannock County to cross the finish line with a time of 41:33 and Suzannah McNear won the women’s Eva L. Smith Memorial Award for the second time with a finish of 47:22.
Grace Sims was the oldest participant at 76 and Quita Parrish’s grandson, Jules Clark, at eight was the youngest finisher. The Parrish family should have gotten an award for family participation. Chris Parrish, his daughter Amelia, Carol Parrish Clark and children, EUyse and Jules, and Phillip and Meryl Strange with their two children, Lilly and Alexander, all participated — Alexander being the first of the family group to cross the finish line. £
