This year the state and Fauquier County citizens have a rooting interest in Chilito, an ultra-quick colt that is owned by Upperville’s Lazy Lane Farm.
Chilito’s strength is in his speed. If the race is run according to plan, Chilito should be on or near the lead right out of the gate. If he’s going to win, he should take the lead outright before they turn for home, and build up enough cushion that the late running contenders won’t be able to catch him.
While the reputation of the Derby is that it is a race for horses that lay far back off the early pace before unleashing a big run to the wire, history shows that horses that can be close to the pace have often been victorious.
