The WTC was the brainchild of English steeplechase enthusiast Konrad Goess Saurau. When he visited the Maryland Hunt Cup in 1994, Saurau was fascinated with the unusual sport of “timber” racing, a jumping race division not part of the rich tradition of steeplechasing in Great Britain. Saurau met with Maryland horseman Irvin Naylor, and, later, Great Meadow founder Arthur Arundel to discuss plans of implementing a timber course in England.
