The four-mile Virginia Gold Cup timber classic is one such event. Aging gracefully as a grande dame of the sport, the Cup will be contested for the 73rd time on May 2. First run in 1922, by the calendar, the Gold Cup should be 76 years old this term, but three years during World War II were blacked out, thus last year was the Gold Cup’s 75th year, and 2000 will be its 75th running. The 1998 renewal is the 76th year, 73rd running.
The 1922 Gold Cup was held at Oakwood near Warrenton. After just two years at that course, the races ' moved to Broadview, staying there (except from 1929 to 1934 when racing went to Clovercroft on the Springs Road) until 1984.
