Altogether there were close to 1500 bags picked >up around the county throughout the month-long event with over 75 county citizens participating to the benefit of 23 local organizations. (There were also many bags picked up with no recorded group or benefitting organization).
This more than doubles any previous single clean-up effort in the county, and hopefully inspired many to join in for an even greater participation next year. Many who participated felt that with more advanced notice and more organizational coordinators in schools, organizations, businesses, county districts and such, donor John Kiser’s goal of 3,333 bags (at $3 per bag) can be achieved or even surpassed.
Particular mention goes to VDOT, an invaluable partner in the project, for they not only provided the highly durable and visible bags but provided roadside collection for most of the contestants. They felt this to be a particularly worthwhile community project as it helps them to better serve the community through reciprocal citizen par'tfripation.
