The NSA categorizes all events of this type simply as timber races when considering a horse’s conditions. For instance, a horse could win the NationsBank Cup and still be eligible for a maiden hurdle race. The NationsBank Cup winner could not, however, run next in the Virginia Silver Cup maiden timber.
The NationsBank Cup is set over three miles and carries a purse of $25,000. Obstacles on the course include regulation hurdles, timber fences, a stone wall, two hedges, a coop, a fallen tree, an up-and-down bank, and the Swan Lake splash through a 170-foot long, 9inch deep stream bed.
The foxhunters’ chase for the Paul Mellon trophy will be run as the day’s first race. Conditions dictate that it can be between three and three-and-three-fourth miles, and the distance will be determined according to entries and weather conditions on race day.
Horses in the foxhunters' chase must be ridden by their owners and must be properly qualified in the hunt field. Riders must wear formal hunting attire, but they may use racing tack and boots.
