I have never been able to put the thrasher announcements into words but others, beside Thoreau, have.
Another writer, Mrs. H.P. Cook writing in 1929, gave the thrasher song as one end of a telephone conversation: Hello, hello, yes, yes, yes, Who is this? Who is this? Well, well, well, I should say, I should say, How’s that? How’s that? I don’t know, I don’t know, well, well, and so on. There is much more to this reported one-sided conversation.
What would Thoreau have made of that? The telephone was far in the future when he wrote of the thrasher’s song. For me, just hearing the distinct cadence of the song is enough. I am glad he has returned from Florida to Flint Hill.
