Santa Anita Derby. It was discovered after the race that his blood count was low, often an indication of illness.
Nevertheless, he is a solid contender who is almost certain to be overlooked. He has wily veteran jockey Chris McCarron on his back,and McCarron doesn’t go to Louisville to drink the mint juleps. He goes because he thinks he can win.
Some others who might have a chance for upsetting the top three or four are Parade Ground, who made a good late move to finish third in the Wood Memorial three weeks ago and Cape Town from D. Wayne Lukas’ barn, a stable that has had a Derby starter for 17 straight years and which won the Derby in ‘95 with Thunder Gulch and ‘96 with Grindstone.
The field could include as many as 20 horses and should have at least 16. Racing luck plays a big part in the outcome, particularly for the come-from-behind horses. Often the winner of the Derby is the horse that is the best horse that day and who gets the most favorable trip.
Uncertainty aside, the Kentucky Derby completes a great day of racing for the two adjoining commonwealths. The 120,00dwho attend the Derby couldn’t get into the Virginia Gold Cup anyway. It’s a good thing that they have something else to do.
Post time for the Kentucky Derby is slated for 5:32 p.m. WJLA channel 7 will air the race, along with a pre-race show. The race will also be broadcast through the public address system at Great Meadow following the completion of the Virginia Gold Cup program.
