The credentials of the other 10 horses nominated to the Gold Cup are solid, but on his true form, Saluter has proved impossible to beat in the spring. The horse best poised to give him competition is locally-owned, -trained and - ridden Hopewell. Owner Clarke Ohrstrom lives in The Plains, as does the horse (at Whitewood Farm under the care of trainer Richard Valentine), and so does regular rider Greg Ryan. His local connections notwithstanding, Hopewell has shown great class this spring with two wins from two starts: the open timber at the Orange County Hunt Point-to-Point and the $17,500 My Lady’s Manor in Maryland.
On the strength of his Maryland victory, Hopewell may have qualified for a shipping allowance to travel to England’s Marlborough Cup. Though only the Virginia Gold Cup winner is eligible for a $100,000 Holland&Holland World Timber Championship bonus, any horse can ship and* go for a piece of the $30,000 Marlborough purse.
