In addition to the first prize and the Marlborough Cup, Saurau will also award a special $2,500 bonus and a separate cup to the first qualified point-to-pointer ridden by an amateur jockey. “We wanted to give an edge to the hard core of ... hunting people,” Saurau said when asked of the origins of his ‘chase. “People who really know, are in tune with their horses.”
Also new this year is the opportunity for more than one American runner to take part in the Marlborough Cup. Holland&Holland will sponsor air travel for three runners — as horses fly on palettes of three in a plane, three can fly as cheaply as one. The shipping allowances will be awarded to the winner of the Gold Cup and the two horses earning the most points in four U.S. races over the last eight months. Last fall’s Genessee Hunt Cup, won by Double Dater, and Pennsylvania Hunt Cup, won by Final Final, add points, as does April’s My Lady’s Manor, won by Virginia-owned, - trained and -ridden Hopewell.
