Pony races

The Virginia Gold Cup is now accepting entries for its pony races to run just before the seven-race steeplechase card at Great Meadow.
A long Gold Cup tradition, pony racing gives young riders the chance to demonstrate their riding skills before large race crowds, an experience especially important for riders who may be planning to make race riding a career. Among those who have graduated from pony racing to become leaders in steeplechasing are Speedy Smithwick, ChuckLa wrence, Ricky Hendricks and Jill Waterman.
Riders must wear racing silks or appropriate hunting attire and a hard hat with chin strap. Protective vests are highly recommended. The races are run at catch weights and riders cannot have reached their 18th birthday as of Jan. 1, 1998. Participants must have prior experience with a hunt or pony club and have written consent of their parents to compete.
