Great Meadow in The Plains was created to serve just that purpose. Built from a former crayfish swampland off of U.S. 17 at Old Tavern, Great Meadow stamped itself immediately as a worthy and permanent home to the Virginia Gold Cup.
This year marks the 13th time the timber challenge has been contested at Great Meadow. During those 13 years, seven National Steeplechase Association annual timber champions have worn the Gold Cup mantle during their championship years — Prince Saran, Sugar Bee, Ozymandias, Von Csadek, Call Louis, Joe’s OK and, of course, four-time winner Saluter. Winning the Gold Cup has played a large role in crowning the nation’s champ, time and time again.
