Now’s the time
School decisions being made now
will affect future tax rates in county
While this year’s school budget may not result
in a tax increase, decisions being made now
will most certainly have far reaching consequences.
The allocation of $100,000 for an architect in this year’s budget to plan for the proposed expansion at the high school is but the first signal of things to come.
It is the future cost of that expansion, the costs of staffing the new section of the high school after expansion and added incremental costs such as additional funds for janitorial service to clean the additional space, etc. that will produce long range effects on tax rates.
There are, of course, other ways to fund budgets but in this county choices are limited. Choices are being made now.
The supervisors cannot possibly know what people are thinking or want if they are not made aware of those wants. Citizens must get involved now in the decision making process or they may find themselves “a day late” down the road.
The supervisors plan a school budget work session this Friday, May 1 in preparation for their final approval of that budget at next Monday’s 2 p.m. meeting. The work session will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the courthouse. It is open to the public and they encourage people to come.
There are items which could be cut in the school budget, and about which the supervisors have yet to decide, such as salary amounts, when salaries take effect and whether or not to approve new positions.
Only two people spoke against this year’s school budget at the public hearing. If you have feelings about it one way or the other now is the time to make them known.
