As the election approaches
and the present council term draws to an end, I write to lend strong support for their attitudes, actions and their caution over time. There appears to be alot of grumbling about officers and members of council, particularly about the supposed lack of concern of the wishes of the electorate.
This, to me, is grossly unfair and ignores reality. I have attended most council meetings and responded to repeated requests of council and committees for input from citizens. I am appalled by how few town and nearby county residents were present, despite pleas for local input.
For years there were no more than a handful. Usually silent voters showed up, and sometimes fewer than the number of council members, until an unpopular, tentative plan was announced. Why didn’t they participate in the developing of the plan as requested?
If people want their wishes known and don’t believe their wishes are expressed by the council, they need to speak up early in the process, rather than complain when council acts without knowing what they may have wanted. When these people finally spoke up, a dialogue was started and the decision was deferred until a new council could act.
The mayor and council members have served effectively with relatively little guidance from those now so eager to unseat them. The present council represents
