The grand finale, known as

“The Gold Cup” is upon us.

I was once an avid attendee at the Gold Cup races. Year after year a family affair being part of what Virginia really meant. I finally realized, (as I have mentioned before, I am a slow learner) that I could get drunk at home, cheaper, quicker and safer. I believe that I went to eight consecutive Gold Cup events and never saw a horse!

To get back to the finale, which made me think of riding horses and ganging up on foxes with dogs. Let me explain how irrational the whole business is to me.

I am sure the thing started out many, many centuries ago because people were hungry. They started without horses and they were not looking for foxes. Actually they probably ate more dogs than foxes. If they could have found a horse they would have eaten that.

As civilization refined, the social order and the feudal system developed. Then there were landholders and kings. Things changed. The hungry people did not get to hunt
