Back in England, the world’s most famous racing challenge was taking form. . Liverpool had been a center for flat racing since 1576, and in 1836, the first ! steeplechase was run on a new course at Aintree. Of the 10 starters, the “fearless” Capt. Becher won on The Duke. In 1839, the grand steeplechase was held again, and a group of aristocrats took over its management. They added a sweepstakes prize and dubbed the race the “Grand Liverpool Steeplechase.”
11 was the second running of the race which immortalized its first winner. When Capt. Becher’s horse Conrad fell at a hedge with a ditch drop on the first round, Becher remounted and continued. On the second circuit, Conrad fell at the same fence again, this time crashing through the rails in front of the fence and diving into the ditch. This time, Becher crawled deep into the ditch and crouched there as the rest of the field leapt the fence.
He was overheard to remark: “Lord, how unpleasant cold water is when
