Did You Know...

The finishing time of most steeplechases equals about two minutes per mile. Shorter hurdle races are often completed faster, with their soft obstacles designed to be ‘brushed through’ rather than jumped cleanly over, like timber races. Since the Gold Cup has been run at Great Meadow, times for the four-mile Virginia Gold Cup have ranged from 8:49 1/5 (Sugar Bee in 1986) down to the stakes record time of 8:27 set by Saluter in his second victory in1995. Times faster '■ than 8 minutes in a fourmile race would suggest that the course is not quite exactly four miles *ong.
