Bob Baffert, Indian Charlie’s trainer, won last year’s Derby with Silver Charm and brings a second contender into this year’s fray: Real Quiet, second in the Santa Anita to his stablemate. Another with a lot of punch down the stretch, Real Quiet just might be the horse for the Downs, and is definitely a part of a dynamic duo either one of which could have the victor’s rose blanket draped across his sweaty shoulders after the race.
You can’t throw out Favorite Trick, last year’s Horse of the Year when he won each of his eight starts. A winner this year in his first pop-out of the box, he was close to a very quick pace last time out in the Arkansas Derby and suffered the first defeat in his career. He should be better for the experience.
Another that is fresh off a career-best race is Halory Hunter. Owned by Boston Celtic coach Rick Pitino and trained by Nick Zito, who has won two Derbys4MMlRade, Halory Hunter won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland three weeks ago. A determined closer, he seems to be peak&ig at the right time and could be an important factor in the run to the wire.
