to (Hottinger’s) class. He comes in every day” to visit. “It’s nice to be able to become a good friend to a kid,” he explained modestly.
In the three-and-a-half years he’s worked at the school, Alther has become a bit of a celebrity. “David makes it seem like every request he gets (from teachers) is the most important task he has to do all day.” Commented Hottinger, “He takes such pride in his work — he is a wonderful role model.”
Alther often spends his free time making toys or equipment for the special ed class. One of his finest efforts is a big yellow school bus, with windows and folding door, that he made out of a discarded cardboard box. Volunteer program coordinator Jan Makela observed that the children enjoy it so much, “some of the letters have been loved off.”
Jenkins “is wonderful — fantastic!” said Hottinger. A school employee for over 30 years, Jenkins says she comes to work because “she enjoys the children.” Like Alther, Jenkins is enthusiastic and has a positive attitude. “She laughs all the time,” observed Makela, “and she always has a kind word for every child.”
