They have two games left. They play Manassas Park away on May 5 and George Mason at home May 8 at 5 p.m. for their final game. Gochenour said they are both “win able ball games. All we have to do is keep playing good fundamental baseball.”
While the JV team is doing well, the varsity is having a rough season. They are 2-11 and facing their final two district games next week.
Friday they played Brentsville away and lost 11-1. Coach Donn Hackney said the team has individuals who really stand out and have done a great job but collectively they are not playing good ball.
Ervin Phillips is hitting a 459. Hackney said his average has really climbed. Also doing well are Abe McLear with o a 421 average and Chris Sealock with a 417 average.
Hackney said the team is aggressive and scores well but their pitfall is defense. “Defensively we’re not there. We shouldn’t be making as many errors as we have been.”
The team lost to Stonewall at home Monday 19-7. Five of their seven runs were scored in the last inning. Hackney said a big part of it is their mental attitude. When they make mistakes, he said they get frustrated and don’t play well and as the mistakes compound they almost “beat themselves.”
They go to District playoffs on May 12 at Manassas Park and while their record has not been what they could have wished for they still could finish well for the district.
Manassas is 3-0, Brentsville is 2-1, George Mason and Rappahannock are both 1-2. “It could easily go either way,” Hackney said. “We’re capable of beating any of these teams.”
If they win Tuesday they’ll go on to district finals May 15.
