Saluter and Fisher will be favored by many on Saturday.
As far as the 9-year-old gelding’s current form, the son of the late Salutely powered to win his sole 1998 start at last weekend’s Middleburg Spring Races. He looked fit and strong, much happier than in his two starts last fall. After winning the ‘97 Gold Cup, Saluter shipped to England to win the Marlborough Cup and secure the World Timber Championship. He took the summer off to freshen up, but his two starts last fall were disappointing. He finished seventh of seven at Virginia Fall, and fifth of seven in the International Gold Cup.
His ‘98 debut was put off twice due to hoof problems. But Fisher had his farrier apply a pad to cushion the abscess that’s plagued him, and it proved a winning cure. Saluter was back to his true form in the April 18 Middleburg Hunt Cup, scoring easily while kept well on the outside to “stay out of trouble,” according to Fisher.
The entry process into the Gold Cup is two-fold: horsemen could nominate to the race for a fee of $50 on April 20. Eleven horses were nominated on that date. Nominees could then enter the race for an additional $50 on April 27.
