On Friday, May 8 local audiences will have a unique opportunity to hear the Black Heritage Orchestra, featuring Mike Russell, an international musician with roots right here in Sperryville.
Russell will be bringing the Black Heritage musicians from Germany, which is their current home, to Rappahannock County for a concert sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community on Friday May 8 at 8 p.m. at The Theatre in Washington, Va.
The concert will tell the story of the black cultural heritage through music, blending elements of traditional jazz and modem rhythm and blues with ethnic African music, salsa, gospel, reggae, funk and rap.
Although Russell was bom in Washington, D.C. in 1952 and grew up there, as a small child he spent his summers with his paternal grandmother Roberta Russell in Sperryville.
His interest in music may date from then. Roberta Russell played the organ for the Hopewell Baptist Church for 37 years.
