The new county animal control officer will be Sheriff’s Deputy James Leake.
The announcement was made by County Administrator John McCarthy announced on the steps of the town hali after the joint meeting of the Board of Supervisors and the Town Council on Feb. 10.
Leake worked from 1995 to 1997 as animal warden — at that time a 30-hour-a-week job without benefits — and quit when he was hired by the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office as the jailer, a full-time position with benefits. '*->
Unlike hiring procedures followed in the past, the position was filled without interviewing a single candidate.
McCarthy also changed the job title from “animal warden” to “animal control officer,” the title used by Culpeper and Fauquier counties.
McCarthy said he was sure it was legal to hire Leake without advertising the job.
