Good news from the National Steeplechase Association offices in Fair Hill, Md, which sanctions more than 50 steeplechase meets each year throughout the U.S. (including 11 this year in Virginia) - purses are expected to reach an all-time high mark of more than $4.5 million available to horsemen this year.

In official news from the NSA, Pennsylvania horseman-businessman George Strawbridge was elected to take over the presidency of the National Steeplechase Association from outgoing officer Bill Pape. Richmond’s Henry Stern will act as treasurer for the group which handles licensing, regulations, horsemen’s bookkeeping and membership.

The most exciting addition to the spring calendar is a new jumping TViple Crown. The inaugural “Steeplechasing TViple Crown" has shifted from an open stakes series to a novice series. “The numbers just weren’t there” to run three top races closely spaced for older, open division horses, according to National Steeplechase Association racing secretary Bill Gallo.
