Management Practice Cost Share Program in the Rappahannock, York, and James River watersheds.
In the 1998 program year the Culpeper District was able to allocate approximately $435,000 in cost share funds on 74 best management practices for water quality improvement. Governor Gilmore’s proposed budget should allow us to install even more practices in 1999.
The goal of the increased funding is to reach nutrient and sediment reduction goals for the Chesapeake Bay. The United States Congress has mandated a 40 percent reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus in the Bay by the year 2000.
In order to coordinate the local efforts toward reaching these goals, a Rappahannock Tributary Strategy is being developed. The goal of the Tributary Strategy will be to help people who live in the river basin improve local water quality and restore living resources in their river.
