During their 20s, the brothers decided to buy a car of their own, rebuild it and become involved in the sport. So in 1988, they did just that, with David as chief crew and chassis engineer and Dennis as driver and public relations manager, roles they still hold today. ..
During the decade or so that has passed, Werner estimates he has taken part in more than 100 races on tracks up and down the east coast. As a driver, he has won twice (most recently at Old Dominion in 1996), placed in the top five some 20 times and landed in the top 10 another 30 times.
Werner acknowledges that he certainly could have raced a lot — and if he had done so, there probably would have been a lot more successes to talk about.
“We have the talent to go further — we just don’t have the whole package right now. That could change, you never know,” he said. “If we walk away having a bad night, it’s disappointing, but we don’t gauge our whole lives on it. It takes a tremendous amount of time and work. It’s a huge commitment.”
Werner also admits that the temptation to give in and totally commit to chasing a championship can be toug to resist once one starts experiencing small amounts of success.
