marks. If all goes well, Cockburn will debut as a “nonriding” trainer at Casanova. For nearly a decade, he was consistently among Virginia leaders in both jockey and trainer categories. It took a hard fall to knock him from that regular perch.
His hands, now without sensation, have 40 years of “leg-lore” locked inside, a major frustration. “I can see. But if you see the damn leg is puffed up, it’s too late. You’ve got to get your hands on it, feel any little bit of heat, or something just a little bit wrong.”
For now, Cockburn is working with his exercise riders, teaching them how to use that neck strap, teaching them how to trot fast enough, trying to teach them to feel a horse’s leg. Trying to train from the ground up.
