Surely all will agree that Rappahannock County is beautiful beyond words. Perhaps the three most important resources we hold are our natural beauty, our historic sites and landmarks, t and our caring people and communities. Many marvel in noting that, as Americans, all of this belongs to each of us as residents. Precious possessions indeed, for which we should God and those citizens who, for centuries before us, have labored to leave us what we now can enjoy. ’ But in receiving these great gifts comes a solemn responsibility for each of us to be good stewards and good citizens. Inasmuch as “citizenship” is defined as “the quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community,” we are each one called to actively take part in preserving and bettering the good around us.
For days beginning on March 1 there is a special call to all citizens to take part in picking up trash around the county. Picking up trash that others have left? Yes ! Consider it a spring cleaning of the county in preparation for the next century.
There has never been a better time to participate. While all of us are called to do our part to keep Rappahannock clean every day of the year, a small group of resident sponsors will pay $3 for each bag of trash collected during the organized trash drive running March 1 through April 15- up to $10,000, of which at least 66 percent will be turned over to the county non-profit group of the citizen’s choice! Citizens may keep $1 per bag or donate it too - the choice is theirs. Sure, we Americans don’t need to be paid to be good citizens, but here is an opportunity to not only preserve our beauty, but also to help any county nonprofit group of our choice (churches, fire companies, rescue squads, scout troops, civic groups, you name it)! What a wonderful idea! The program was started last year and some 1,500 bags of unsightly garbage were picked up, resulting in $4,500 being contributed to the good causes of those who did the work. This year the goal is to have at least 3,333 bags of trash removed and see at least $6,666 contributed to county non-profit causes. There’s even a grand prize of $1000 for the most bags filled.
