Alexander Mackay Smith, former editor of the “Chronicle of the Horse” died in August at the age of 95. The Millwood resident was an avid horseman and founder of a number of local, regional and national horse organizations.
• Upperville philanthropist and horseman Paul Mellon died at his Oak Spring farm Feb. 1. An art collector, thoroughbred breeder, classic winner and conservationist, Mellon may be best remembered locally for his love of horses, riding and foxhunting.
• Fairfax Hunt master of foxhounds Randy Rouse lost his multiple point-to-point timber champion Cinzano to the infirmities of old age in January.
The gelding, imported from Uruguay, was part of one of the nation’s best-known “ringer” cases when racing under another horse’s name in New York. For being an innocent part of his former owner’s betting scheme, Cinzano got a “life” sentence, banned forever from sanctioned racing.
