‘Chasing without racing is what pacing is all about.
The competitive spirit is alive and well throughout Virginia’s hunt country; bold steeplechase jockeys don’t have a lock on riding rivalry.
The sport of hunter pacing — organized by area hunt clubs as a fund- and fun-raiser usually in conjunction with their point-to-point races in the spring — began locally with the Feb. 14 Bull Run Hunt hunter pace, and continues through the April 17 Loudoun Hunt event.
Paces are timed events over natural hunting territory that give riders a chance to experience the “best of the rest,” a ridden course over eight different hunt countries while attempting to match the pre-set “optimum” time.
