“People thought I was crazy, but it worked,” he said. “It really paid off. That was a good night for me.
It must have been a good night about 10 years ago when DeLozier was dragged to a demolition derby, his first encounter with motorsports. He spent a year or so wrecking junk cars on the county fair circuit, and racing “run what ya brung” enduro races at tracks in Hagerstown, Md., Saluda, Va., and Lincoln, Pa.
In 1990 he got into real racing, and competed in the Pure Stock division at Saluda’s dirt track, Mid Bay Raceway.
About the same time the office furniture installation company for which he worked went out of business, and the accounts landed in his lap. Suddenly DeLozier was a business owner.
He now employs 75 people. “They all call me dad,” he said. And so do 5year-old Rachael and Eric, 2.
Cathy DeLozier, to whom Dale’s been married 13 years, said that her husband is “a good guy” and “the kids just adore him.”
“He obsessed with doing well,” she said, “and with everybody’s welfare.”
Cathy said that DeLozier worries about his employees and his race crew. And he worries about handling himself in a proper manner at the race track, both in and out of the car.
