1950: The nation’s first asphalt “superspeedway,” Darlington (S.C.) Raceway opens.
June 16,1951: The first NASCAR premier division race is run under the lights, in Columbia, S.C.
1959: Daytona International Speedway opens.
1961: Highlights of the Firecracker 250 from Daytona Beach is televised on ABC’s Wide World of Sports.
1970: Buddy Baker becomes the first driver to clock an official lap in excess of 200 mph. Restrictor plates to limit top speeds are introduced that same year as a safety measure.
1972: The Winston Cup schedule is fixed at 31 championship events, all of 250 miles or more in length. This begins the “modem era” of NASCAR racing.
1976: Attendance at the NASCAR Winston Cup Series tops 1.4 million — making it the best-attended motorsports series in the world.
1979: The Daytona 500 became the first 500-mile race in history to be telecast live in its entirety. Richard Petty wins on the final lap — and CBS gets an Emmy for its efforts.
