The penetrating jackhammer thud of hooves on grassy turf beats in rhythm to the rush of air in and out of the flaring nostrils of the horses. There is a faint sound of squeaking leather and a jingle of metal as stirrups and buckles click.... You are enclosed within a wall of these sounds by the force of your concentration, sensitive to every vibration of your horse’s stride and each slight variation of pressure on the reins. There is a sensation of wind as the speed pushes air into your face and ears.

Now a barrier looms, dark and menacing, in your path. You feel an almost imperceptible change in your horse’s momentum as he adjusts his stride to meet the takeoff point. ... Your body picks up the horse’s emphatic rhythm, and you feel the great hindquarters gather under you. Suddenly, you are in the air, feeling the clean, exhilarating sensation of flight.

You are on a ’chaser.
