• 1938 — Marion duPont Scott’s Battleship, a son of Man O’War, becomes the first American-bred and -owned horse to win England’s Grand National.
• 1943 — Judy Johnson is the first woman to ride a race over jumps, partnering at least two mounts at Pimlico in Maryland. World War II had drawn away many male jockeys. In this year only three of 30 scheduled meets are held because of the war — two are the Middleburg Races and Montpelier Races.
• 1946 — At the completion of WWII, 14 hunt meetings host steeplechase races, with the sport showing new activity, too, at the pari-mutuel tracks.
