Dennis Werner is coming off one of the best years he has experienced as a stock car driver. Now the start of a new Winston Racing Series season at'the Old Dominion Speedway is just a few weeks away — and the 35-year-old Warrenton resident isn’t what you’d call ready for it.
For one thing, the 1999 Monte Carlo fhat Werner and his brother David — the two namesake members of the Werner Racing team — are building for the upcoming campaign isn’t in driving condition yet. As of last week, the machine sat in pieces while the brothers and their crew worked to bring it up to NASCAR regulations.
And then there’s the numerous phone calls that still need to be placed by Werner, who not only drives the car but handles most of the public relations duties for the team.
But Werner isn’t worrifed about it either. He’s done it all before and knows it will all get done again. Besides, he’s got other things on his mind on this afternoon in midFebruary — he’s less than 24 hours away from his annual voyage down to Florida to experience the Daytona 500 as a spectator.
