1999 series. Adam Petty, the 18-yearold son of Kyle Petty and grandson of all-time champion Richard Petty and great-grandson of NASCAR pioneer Lee Petty began his professional career a year ago. It appears that he’s the first fourth-generation professional athlete in any sport.
The Busch Series runs twice in Richmond this season (May 14, Sept. 10) and also makes a June 12 stop at the South Boston (Va.) Speedway in Radford.
• This will be the fifth season for the NASCAR Craftsman Trudk Series, with full-sized American-made pickups that are race-prepared similar to the Winston Cup machines. ESPN and ESPN2 will broadcast 21 of the 25 series races, while CBS will show three races in July.
Two Craftsman series races will be run in Virginia: the April 17 NAPA 250 at Martinsville and the Sept. 9 Virginia is for Lovers 200 in Richmond.
• There are nine regional racing circuits sanctioned by NASCAR. These touring divisions include such circuits as the NASCAR Winston West Series and the Busch North Series.
• The NASCAR Winston Racing Series offers a $1.3 million championship point fund for short-track racers at almost 100 tracks across the country.
Virginia tracks involved with the program include Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, along with tracks in Richmond, Radford and Hampton.
