Ponying up to play the game is how many of today’s leading steeplechase professionals earned their spurs in the very adult sport of jump racing.
Literally.
Pony race riders often carry their sporting tradition long into adulthood. Longtime leading lady rider Jill Waterman; former National Steeplechase Association leading riders Chuck Lawrence, Sean Clancy, Chip and Blythe Miller; leading flat track trainer Speedy Smithwick — they all trace their earliest racing roots back to small, medium and large ponies charging up Virginia courses near and far.
Divisions for ponies are limited to riders age 16 or under, and ponies are placed in categories: small, medium and large.
