Carpenter and Simon enjoy the fact that the club celebrates the sport of auto racing, but Hardisty explains that it offers support for “the racing family” when that support is needed.
“We do have an injured drivers’ fund that we work hard to raise money for all year,” Hardisty said. “Most of the time we don’t have to use that, but we did have to dip into it three times this past year.”
One driver was injured while racing at Potomac, Hardisty explained. Another driver fell seriously ill and a third was injured in a traffic accident. The club doesn’t profess to act as insurance, but pitches in to help offset expenses in a driver’s time of crisis.
“We had some guys that heeded some help and we helped them a little bit,” Hardisty said. “It’s good to know that we can offer a little bit of support to drivers if they get injured ' in any way.”
The club expects to have a banner year in 1999.
“We’re trying to do a little more this year,” Hardisty said. “This year we’re going to have a real nice nostalgia night, let the old-timers know that we haven’t forgotten about them.”
Besides a more elaborate than usual nostalgia night, the club hopes to have a holiday party in 1999, complete with a visit from Santa Claus for members’ children.
