As the century turns, the mind hearkens back to the “good old days” and dawning of the sport of steeplechasing. Competitors in the Ruhsam series of old-fashioned point-to-points take that sense of nostalgia to its upper reaches.
Old-fashioned racing digs back to the very roots of the game when two 18th century Irish foxhunters argued who had the swiftest horse; they raced literally from point to point — from the steeple at St. Leger church to the one visible at St. Buttevant, three miles distant.
Their course? Didn’t matter. Each selected the route he thought fastest, best suited to his mount and most direct. The winner? Unrecorded.
