racing’s 3-year-okl classics, the Steeplechase lYiple Crown includes an April 29 race at Churchill Downs in Kentucky, a May 13 race at Pimlico in Baltimore, and a June 3 race at Belmont Park in New York. Each race differs in distance (like the flat series) and will offer a $100,000-added purse and pari-mutuel wagering.
The Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky. will host an April 23 grade I, $175,000, open hurdle handicap. The week of April 22 through May 1 may be one to make plans for being in Kentucky: the Rolex three-day event, CCI**** is April 22-25. Add that to the April 23 ’chase at Keeneland, the April 29 ’chase at Churchill and the May 1 Kentucky Derby, it is certain to be a horse sports paradise.
Steeplechase jockey Bitsy Patterson, knocked into a three-week coma in a fall at last November’s Colonial Cup races in South Carolina, is now resting at home in Delaware following long months of in-patient physical therapy. She is now undergoing out-patient therapy at the nearby Bryn Mawr rehabilitation hospital in southern Pennsylvania, taking physical, emotional, mental and occupational therapies to try and get back in the saddle soon. Friends report her progress slow but her attitude good.... _ . ..... ..
