“We were putting pressure on ourselves — the more you do, the harder it is to stop. We had to take a step back and say, ‘Whoa, what are we doing?’ ”
That acknowledgement led to a new attitude in 1998, a seasoi. hat Werner ranks among his favorites in the sport. They only raced eight times and did not win one of them, but th< y never finished out of the top seven and found a spot within the top five a majority of the time. And even more importantly, they rediscovered the aspects of the sport that had been slipping away.
“Anybody who watched us race last year saw that we were not only competitive, but we had a lot more fun than some of the people out there," Werner said. “Right now at the level we’re at, we feel that’s more important.”
