For 41 years the Metropolitan Auto Racing Fans Club has promoted the sport in the Washington, D.C., area, and it continues to grow.
One of the oldest organizations of its kind, MARF recently held its awards banquet. More than 300 people attended as champions and newsmakers from Maryland’s Potomac Speedway and Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas were recognized for their 1998 achievements.
Melvin Hardisty first got involved with the club when he was a teen-ager. The 44-year-old electrician from Beltsville, Md., serves as the club’s president, a position he has held for three years.
“We have a monthly meeting where people can come and sit down and talk about racing, discuss what’s happening in the area,” said Hardisty, a former racer who has worked as the race director at Potomac Speedway for about five years. “We see what we can do to better the sport. We offer a nice awards banquet at the end of the year where we have people honored who deserve awards for what they’ve accomplished during the year.
