Racehorses now have a new kind of blinkers designed specially to “reduce drag,” according to its inventor.
Race Tee Blinkers, creator John Ketchem said, have a 3.5-inch slit in the back of the blinker cup - thus taking away some of the wind resistance. Keeping a horse as aerodynamic as possible could mean the difference between second and first place. The body-forming Lycra silks that jockeys now wear instead of billowy satin came into popular use just a decade ago; they are now de rigeur in all flat races. Many steeplechase owners buy into the idea, too.
Ketchem said that a horse racing without any type of blinkers is the most aerodynamic; however, if a horse must wear the focus-sharpening device, the slit provides an advantage. Then again, Ketchem is pretty much in tune to aerodynamics: he suggests shaving the mane and tail.
