As to having a copy of the survey of the meridian line on file in the Rappahannock County Clerk’s Office, one stray is that Sutphin in his old age believed that he owned all the surveys he had done for the county. One day, he walked into the Clerk’s Office, reached into a wooden barrel where surveys were kept, flung them in the air, picked his surveys up off the floor, and left.
Is it possible to locate the old 1896 Meridian Line for Washington, VA, and its meridian markers? Well, let’s just say that what we know now is close enough for government work.
