Sheppard’s third win at Colonial (Hodsdan’s second) came with Kathryn Fitzpatrick's Valley's Pride in the $15,000 maiden July 29.
Probably the most sentimental win of the entire summer meet was when jockey Robbie Walsh won a $15,000 allowance hurdle with Jack Fisher's Duke of Earl July 29.
Walsh is recovering from a horrific racing accident April 22 that left him with several serious fractures and three metal plates in his face.
The pony-sized Duke of Earl teamed up with rival Great Gusto at the last, but he sped away on landing to win by two lengths.
“I broke him so pretty much know him inside and out,” Walsh said of the horse. “.lark said to ‘take your time and make one run, that's all he's got.’ He’s a game little horse who likes to travel in behind. We had a couple of miscosnmunications early on so I just let him be. I figured I was still a bit rusty.”
He’d only been back in the saddle a few weeks.
Walsh said his training regimen was light as he amight to regain fitness.
