The American national
fence was
introduced on the Fall, 1973 steeplechase circuit. The innovative design persists today, with jumps virtually identical to the early prototypes still in use at all National Steeplechase Association venues.
Some courses kept their natural, living hedges until recently — the Iroquois in Tennessee did; the Montpelier estate in Orange County still does. Though Montpelier's fall meet runs its feature stakes over the “brush' course, other hurdle races on the day are contested over regulation national fences, set alongside the hedges.
Other courses such as the brief-lived St. James Races in Chicago, built custom-designed hedges with rails, beautiful to look at.
