Other homes have a mailbox by a main road, but do not have anything to indicate where the house is located.
Emergency services are still getting to their destinations, Burke said, but not as quickly as they would if everyone’s addresses were marked more visibly. If an emergency vehicle has to backtrack or slow down to search for street numbers, first responders are wasting time that may be the difference between life and death.
“A lot of people don’t think about it until it’s time for an emergency,” Burke said. “Anytime you’re slowing your emergency care to a patient could be critical. ... Time is of the essence when it’s time to find these places.”
