Land of the Mtte guy Unlike flat track midgets, steeplechase jockeys are relatively “normai-sized” athletes. The minimum weight in a steeplechase race is typically in the 140-pound range as compared to the featherweight 110-pound level for flat jockeys. Steeplechase races are longer: two to four miles, as opposed to five furlongs to 1 1/4 miles. Steeplechase horses are older (usually 4 and up, as opposed to barely 2) and bigger (since their training regimen often includes cross-country work that builds bigger muscles, and their stable routine usually includes extended periods of turnout in grass pastures that builds more bulk.)
