Steeplechasers have to rely on athleticism and jumping ability as well as speed to see them home first. Though the soft, inviting national fence hurdles used in the U.S. are fairly forgiving of a jumping error, solid timber rails are less so. Here, a timber horse makes a bobble at Middleburg’s Glenwood Park. As he approaches the jump, ter left, the final stride finds him too dose to take off at a natural arc. At left, the jockey struggles to stay with the awkward effort.
